The idea for Groove Grove Graphics has come from two exhibitions that have taken place within the past few years at londonprintstudio – Joe Strummer, Past, Present and Future (2004) , and Agitpop (2008) which celebrated the 40th anniversary of the 1968 protests. The shows were very different, - one celebrating the life of local musician Joe Strummer; the other featuring posters and music associated with rebellion from all over the world. While researching Agitpop we started thinking about the significance and creativity of our part of London- North Kensington, Notting Hill, Kensal Green- down to Chelsea and across to the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm- in producing music, fashion and design ideas; by the early '60's West London countercultures had developed that were starting to influence the rest of the world. And over a very long time - they continue to influence the world.
So we decided to organise this show. It involves different generations of artists and musicians across a long timespan; some are very famous - and others are not. We're interested in the designers, the musicians and the people who have created 'scenes'. 6 of us are working on the show right now, getting in exhibits, doing interviews and producing material, and designing the show.
We have already spoken to some extraordinary people including Joe Boyd, Hoppy Hopkins, Delroy Washington, John Sinclair, Dudley Edwards, Mike McInnerney.
The exhibition is being organised into 8 different sections:- Absolute Beginners, Do It Yourself, All You Need is Love, Sympathy with the Devil, War ina Babylon, Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, Radio Gaga - with two additional 'Dreams' and 'Shrines' features - all spanning different eras and genres.
We're about to distribute a flier locally to people to involve people who have been active in the West London music and design scenes.
