Following the dissolution of the African Brothers Minott worked at one of the great learning grounds in Jamaican music- Coxsone Dodds Studio One, where he eventually released two albums of material in 1979- "Live Loving" and "Showcase" (and the later 1982 release, "More Sugar"). Following the success of two further albums, "Ghetto-ology" and "Black Roots", released on West London labels Trojan and Island respectively, he spent some of the early 80's living in the UK.

While Sugar did not have too many explicitly direct connections with West London, he was one of the few Jamaican artists to achieve international success while nurturing talent in his homeland. Along with the aforementioned UK success Sugar also had a productive stint recording for Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes' label Wackies in New York, while he continued to promote other talent through his Youth Promotion soundsystem and "Black Roots" record label. A selection of previously unexhibited photographs of Sugar Minott and members of his Youthman Promotion crew taken by Stella Whalley are on show at the Groove Grove Graphics exhibition.

A warm night in West London - a fantastic opening party with more than 200 guests, Mark M.'s old skool sound system and great music. It was good to see people relating to our album covers as design works, interesting to hear some of the memories stirred by the exhibition.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472083097643741309.post-90602055012166591882010-06-29T12:17:00.003+01:002010-06-29T12:48:11.266+01:00
West London's internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist Courtney Pine will be playing at one of the many concerts at Hampton's Summer Picnic Concerts to help fund raise for the Hampton pool.
Pine has spent more than two decades revitalising a public interest in jazz beginning with his 1986 debut album Journey to the Urge Within, which was the first jazz record to infiltrate the UK Top 40.

The concert will showcase material from his 2009 album Transition in Tradition, a tribute to legendary Creole saxophonist Sidney Bechet, who Pine sites as one his most important influences as a jazz musician.

You can buy tickets direct from Hampton Summer Picnic Concert's website.
Kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06836322551153215946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472083097643741309.post-51442962676460084392010-06-19T17:46:00.006+01:002010-06-19T18:27:03.903+01:00M.I.A. - Galang
Is M.I.A. the ultimate West London rebel girl?

One serious contender for this title is the Railway Hotel in West Hampstead. During the 1960's it ran a weekly club night known as Klooks Kleek.

Originally a jazz club, the music changed to reflect the new interest in Rhythm and Blues. West and South West London were UK blues centres in the early '60's, and a number of small venues became part of a thriving new club scene including the Marquee, the Flamingo, the Ricky Tick, and the Crawdaddy. Klooks was small upstairs function room. Unlike other venues it had no stage at all. There were no mixing desks, lighting rigs, or sound checks; the bands just tuned up and played. While the Graham Bond Organisation was probably the most respected band of that era, others went on to much more success, among them the Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Eric Clapton, Family, The Who, Rod Stewart, Cream, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin all of whom played at Klooks. There was also Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band, Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds, Georgie Fame, Herbie Goins and the Nightimers, Geno Washington and the Ram-Jam band, Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. Although the presenter states the show focuses on Brixton and Stoke Newington, it also features footage of Carnival and West London musician Delroy Washington as well as scenes from Chalk Farm recording studio. Part two features footage of Ijahman Levi, who released two albums on Island, Ladbroke Grove area locals Aswad and scenes from the Q club in Paddington. Portobello Road has changed a lot since I first remember it in the 80's and has witnessed even more change with layers of gentrification from the 1950's (the period Groove Grove Graphics starts with) to the present day. The front page protests outraged with the chain store All Saints moving into the antique area of the market showed the determination people have to preserve a traditional idea of Portobello Road. But that idea will always be quite subjective. The ten songs I've selected express an idea of the street, and all explicitly name check Portobello Road in the lyrics or the titles (hence the recent Blur single release, although it describes a walk down portobello road, is excluded).

1. Let's start with the biggest one. When I first saw Bedknobs and Broomsticks as a child I was convinced there must have been another Portobello Road market somewhere- the scenes in the movie bore such little similarity to the street I knew. Watching this now I get the idea the Bedknobs and Broomsticks version is really a strange combination of all London markets, but at this point Portobello must have had enough pop cache to feature as the named street. This section of the movie features a large multi ethnic dance sequence with a jazz band, dancing Sikhs, Highland dancers, a Caribbean steel band, a young (albeit non-dancing) Bruce Forsyth and plenty of stock tap-jazz dancers. This was in 1971 and the idea that Portobello Road was a multi-ethnic place where you could find just about anything you could think of seemed to be firmly established in the mainstream.

2. The Spectrum recorded their song "Portobello Road" at some point in the two years of their existence between 1967-1969 and included it on their only LP "The Light is Dark Enough" in 1970. The song is a twee description of Portobello Road in a pop-psychedlic style. The group also recorded the closing credits tune for the sci-fi puppet show "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons" while band member Keith Forsey later wrote "What a Feeling" for Flashdance, and produced Billy Idol and Psychedelic Furs.

3. Billy Nicholl's take on Portobello Road is taken from his 1968 album "Would You Believe". The song describes screaming children and, in perhaps a 1960's LSD inspired moment, "people taking off the lid to see what's beneath". It also continues the idea that "you can buy most anything- paperclips or Eastern European wedding rings". Billy Nicholls probably knew the area well enough being a local from nearby White City. Before recording "Would You Believe", Billy Nicholls was a staff writer for Andrew "Loog" Oldham's Immediate record label- Oldham apparently wanted the album to be a UK version of Pet Sounds, and it features the cream of the session musician from the time along with John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin and almost every member of the Small Faces.

4. Cat Stevens released his song about Portobello Road before any other on this roundup as the B-Side to his 1966 single "I Love My Dog". Again the song describes the street as a unique place where "nothing is weird, not even a beard". Although Cat is known as an impressive songwriter this was written by American Kim Fowley who later assembled and managed The Runaways.

5. Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil both lived in London while in exile from Brazil. Although it seems Gilberto Gil had the better musical experience in West London (attending performances by Yes, Incredible String Band and being exposed to reggae with Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley and Burning Spear, while Caetano Veloso said "London felt dark and I felt far away from myself") Caetano Veloso recorded a song mentioning the area. In "Nine Out Of Ten" he describes walking "down Portobello Road to the sound of reggae" and name checks the Electric Cinema. While he acknowledges the effect the market meeting point of cultures has on exposing him to new sounds, the song is melancholic although this is probably more attributable to the reasons behind him being in London than the area itself.

6. I'm not a big Dire Straits fan so I wasn't aware of their Song "Portobello Belle" until I started a bit of research for this list. The song describes the "Barrow Boys" and the market in much the same way as the first four songs in the list and as with "Nine out of Ten" the "Reggae Rumble" as now one of the most identifiable sounds in the area. For the first time in the list, though, it describes another person separate from the singer who the singer identifies with the area.

7 . "Bunny Lee and the Aggrovators Presents Super Dub Disco Style" features a track titled "Portobello Special Dub"- Bunny Lee would doubtless have encountered Portobello Road at some point in his many trips to London but it is unclear whether this is a direct reference to an event on the street or a commercial move thanking some of the UK purchasers of his products.

8. Clifton "Larry" Lawrence moved to the UK from Jamaica in 1965, worked as a truck driver and launched a soundsystem, later producing local talent for Trojan subsidiaries. In 1974 he launched the Ethnic Fight label, based out of the same premises as his record shop on Kilburn High Road. "Portobello Dub" is on his LP "Out Of One Man Many Dubs" which indeed features many local-named dub tracks with "Harrow Road Dub" and "Kilburn High Rock Dub" also among the titles.

9. Damon Albarn describes writing the songs for "Modern Life Is Rubbish" as "in a classic English vein" and using "weird caustic lyrics about England as it was at that moment" and certainly mentions the area of London in which he was living in the track "Blue Jeans". Not a celebration of the area, just a nonchalant mention of buying some "air cushioned soles" on Portobello Road within a rather melancholic song. At this point it seems the image of the market has reverted to a commercial area, far from an inspirational creative place.

10. The Pink Fairies were one of the main acts in the London Underground scene which was centered around the Ladbroke Grove / Portobello Road area. Portobello Shuffle is another storming track from their second album "What a Bunch Of Sweeties".

Dominick moves from journalism to deejaying
Story of the song: "Cockney and Yardie" combines foreign speech

Dominic is a Ladbroke Grove local, if you don't know much about him the interview on ricenpeas.com is a good place to start- I especially like the comment about Super Cat and Early B:

How they DJ is how they live, they’d be singing, “A de kitchen mi de, mi de listen reggae.” And they’d have a tape playing and be cooking fish and all of that in the kitchen. It was wicked.

Dominic is best known for his track "Boy George", recorded in Jamaica on Jammys, included on his Island Records LP "Ready For Dominic", and described with a nice turn of phrase in the Mel Cooke article as a song which:

"protested "who seh Dominick fava Boy George" and went on to list the things that Boy George did sexually that Dominick did not."

Caution: there is a little "slackness" in these clips, particularly from Lecturer in the third video.
After a very long coach ride and unappetising service station breakfast we arrived in sunny Leeds and then headed through the country side (chock full of sheep and daffodils) to his lovely home where we talked a bit about his work over the years and his involvement in the West London scene of the 1960's.

Back in the 1960's he created some of the most awe inspiring artworks with the pop art collective Binder Edwards & Vaughn. The as yet unnamed single, their first since "Good Song" in 2003 is one of a series of limited issue material to be released on 7" for Record Store Day. Material by artists including Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, Pet Shop Boys, Lily Allen, Jimi Hendrix, Nick Cave, Babyshambles and the Beatles will also be released as limited edition 7" singles to support the event on the 17th of April.

He was said to have been suffereing from Mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer since his diagnosis in late 2009 and died due to a sudden worsening of his condition.

Although McLaren was most well known for having solidified the role of the Sex Pistols in the punk rock history books, he managed ( and disbanded) several other groups before and after them, most notably the New York Dolls, Adam and the Ants and after disbanding them, with the musicians that made up the Ants, he put together and managed new wave one hit wonders Bow Wow Wow, best known for their cover of "I Want Candy".

His foray into music management flourished from opportunities he saw arise from running his own shop on the Kings Road with designer and former partner Vivienne Westwood beginning with Let it Rock, which led to Sex and then to Seditionaries - all influencing and changing the look of an entire sub culture.

McLaren himself was a musician, releasing the critically acclaimed Duck Rock in 1983 which featured a number of new wave musicians of the time, from Trevor Horn to Thomas Dolby. The album had two major hits, Double Dutch which featured African and South American inspired instrumentation and Buffalo Gals, of which parts are taken from an traditional folk song from the 19th century. He would continue to release albums until 2009, with Shallow- Musical Paintings.

Whether you call him the godfather of punk or an opportunistic capitalist, McLaren will be remembered for his enthusiasm for cutting edge entertainment and of always bringing something new to the forefront. McLaren's body is said to be returning to the United Kingdom very soon and he is to be buried at Highgate Cemetry in North London.

Numan has been working on his new album Dead Son Rising which is to be released later in 2010.

Born and raised in Hammersmith, West London, Numan and his band Tubeway Army got into the punk scene a little late but they were the first 'punks' to use synthesizers, changing the sound of electronic music.

Numan later went solo and had a number with his first album The Pleasure Principle released in 1979 including "Cars" and "Complex".

Numan continued his initial commercial and critical success throughout the 1980's, resulting in a great deal of influence in music. Gary Numan's songs are some of the most sampled and covered songs of the last 30 years from an entire album of covers called Random featuring Damon Albarn, St. Etienne and the Magnetic Fields to some of the chart topping sampled songs like Basement Jaxx's 2002 hit "Where's Your Head At?" using Numan's "M.E." and the Sugababes "Freak Like Me" which used Tubeway Army's "Are Friends Electric?". Most recently he collaborated with Little Boots for BBC Radio 6 at the Maida Vale studios in 2009 which was very well received, with over a million views, making it the most popular session available on the interactive Red Button service to date.

Originally released in 1979 by Rough Trade the Raincoats debut album was remastered and re-released in November 2009. It's been 30years since they emerged from the musically fertile West London squat scene that also produced the The Clash. Since then they've seen a mid 90's resurgence of interest, facilitatied by Kurt Cobain (who claimed their music cheered him up!) and now ATP and Don't Look Back have got together to present a live performance of their first album in it's entirety.

He claims "Stylo", released by Damon Albarns cartoon supergroup is a "blatant rip off" of his 1982 track "Time Warp". Grant and Gorillaz both share their publishing company, EMI. "I am very angry that this was not picked up by our mutual publisher EMI's administration division."

"I do not blame my publishers but the state of the industry at the current time with all labels and publishers folding into one and becoming incestuous.

"It's such an obvious copy that from day one, the band and their management should have taken control of this situation with EMI Publishing.

"I would like the outcome to be that the band admits that they have lifted my song, that I have a full credit for the song and an apology from the band."

Eddy Grants 1983 smash "Electric Avenue" is one of the great London landmark songs. He also has prior relations with West London bands; the Clash covered his song "Police On My Back" for their album Sandinista! whose Mick Jones and Paul Simonen both appear on the new Gorillaz album.

Oh Dame Vivienne, you've done it again! Vivienne Westwood's most recent collection for Fall/Winter 2010/ 2011 at Paris Fashion Week featured an interesting mix of florals, graphic prints and knee high socks - one part schoolmarm and one part rock n roll. It also had all the signatures of Westwood; yards and yards of beautiful (and indeed costly) fabric in every colour that ever existed, layered on top of one another with clashing patterns and graphics in what at first glance would appear to be a disheveled manner. But if you know Westwood's work, you know nothing is ever unintentional and upon closer inspection, the attention to detail is anything but haphazard.
As with all of Vivienne Westwood's runway shows she shows a playfulness and attitude that many of her contemporaries lack, this time the models had moustaches and wore enourmous brightly coloured crowns. That particular 'punk spirit' has found its way into all of her collections.

Westwood's designs are very much a part of our 'fashion consciousness', and she has continued to stay relevant and inspire others. With her success she has managed to bring punk not just to the mainstream but elevate it to high fashion status. She has been made a Dame, has had a retrospective at the Victoria & Albert Museum, been involved in the Sex and the City film and many a celebrity has walked the red carpet wearing one of her dresses. How did this shocking (and arguably, political) fashion statement become a part of our everyday?

Westwood was once a school teacher ( which might explain the schoolmarm thing) before she began dabbling in clothing design. Her then partner Malcolm McLaren had a stall in the Paradise Garage shop at 430 Kings Road before making the shop his own and changing its name to Let it Rock, and sold Teddy boy clothing, which was going through a revival at the time. Such were McLaren's tendencies to cash in on the latest trends, it wasn’t long after that the shop changed its name to Too Fast to Live Too Young to Die and began selling Westwood's original designs beside rock n roll revival apparel. These early designs were an indication of what was to come, with t-shirts with zippered embellishments and printed with quotes from the manifesto for the Society for Cutting Up Men.

After a trip to New York and a heavy influence from Richard Hell, McLaren and Westwood once again changed the direction of the shop. This time, everything from the previous incarnations of the shop was left in the dust. The SEX shop went through a complete rebirth - now selling bondage gear, whips, leather and kinky lingerie; some of it 'redesigned' with Westwood flourishes.

By this time McLaren had already attempted a reinvention of the New York Dolls, which ultimately did them no favours. Dressing them in full red PVC outfits with Communist touches wasn’t fully taken on by an audience and McLaren had no use for them anymore. This would not be his last foray into band 'management'.

The Sex Pistols had been playing as the Strand when McLaren began acting as their manager. Soon after McLaren, ever the svengali removed Wally Nightingale as frontman and went on the hunt for someone new. What is important to remember is that John Lydon was not chosen by Malcolm McLaren for his vocal prowess but for his fashion sense, specifically his "I hate Pink Floyd" shirt and green hair. The Sex Pistols would be the models used to show some of Vivienne's most interesting creations, and her Situationist inspired politics, to the world. Following their first gig at Saint Martins College the band played all over town and gained quite a following.

As the Sex Pistols grew in notoriety so did SEX and Westwood's designs. Screen printed t shirts with pornography, ripped and burned clothing, tartan trousers with straps and zippers and PVC pockets were becoming a trend on the Kings Road among those who liked their fashion cutting edge and expensive. As a means of both promoting and banking on the Pistols rise to fame the shop began selling various Sex Pistols inspired items, mostly t-shirts with their name and a variety of controversial images. From here, SEX became a very cool place to be. Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders worked there briefly, Glen Matlock - a founding member of the Sex Pistols started out as a shop assistant and Sid Vicious followed in his footsteps (as a shop assistant and then taking over Matlock’s position in the band), as well, Jordan ( aka Pamela Rooke) and anyone else in the Bromley Contingent could be seen in and around the shop.

It is this incarnation of the shop that produced some of the most iconic designs and images from the punk era, including the infamous Destroy shirt emblazoned with a swastika and screen-printed t-shirts with the image used for Pistols single 'God Save the Queen' by artist Jamie Reid.

Seditionaries became World's End; as it still is today and Westwood went on to create her first runway show in 1981 with her Pirates collection, leading to yet another new trend in eighteenth century excess called New Romantic. Vivienne Westwood had her first Paris fashion show in 1983. From there Westwood became a bona fide fashion designer, an insider in the world of haute couture and legitimacy even while breaking a number of 'high fashion' rules.

Her collections manage to pull from opposing aesthetics, always rooted in punk with against-the-grain silhouettes, shredded and layered fabrics and fetish inspired studded leather while maintaining a distinctly historical British character with her past and present use of tweeds, tartans and corsets. With a keen eye for a trend and brazenly putting upfront the meaning and inspiration of her garments instead of giving in to subtlety, Vivienne Westwood managed to bring a small sub culture from West London to the high fashion world, making her name synonymous with punk couture.
Kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06836322551153215946noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472083097643741309.post-9628574216967924782010-03-06T14:55:00.003+00:002010-04-16T01:22:22.532+01:00SAVE OUR ABBEY?
